Fendi Fall 21 Couture

For his second couture collection at Fendi, Kim Jones wrote a love letter to Rome with dream-like, diaphanous gowns, statuesque tailoring and colosseum inspired accessories. The collection was presented through an evocative video that opened with Kate Moss, and saw models glide round a Roman ruin that overlooked a mock backdrop of the Eternal City. Just like Jones’ debut Spring couture show in January, he captured the all important element of story telling in couture. The breathtakingly beautiful dresses adorned with feathers, sequins and ethereal organza trains were accessorised with grey cuff bracelets that looked as if they were chiseled out of cool marble. Roman’s used marble when constructing their infamous structures because of its beauty, and it was subtle nods like these that helped to intricately weave the story behind the collection into the designs.

Hints of Rome could also be found in the colosseum shaped heels of the off-white leather boots, and the court shoes adorned with a shimmering mosaics.

Mosaics were a consistent theme throughout the collection, in particularly Mother of Pearl mosaics in the form of delicate, iridescent flowers. They appeared on shoes, bags and earrings, but their place on the seductively sheer, floor length dresses was where they really shone. Jones also used recycled fur to create a bolero jacket covered with a fur mosaic.

The collections Jones has released so far for Fendi have all been consistently beautiful and a perfect balance of richly opulent designs alongside intricate, nuanced nods to the collections themes. His attention and understanding of the importance of details is a side of Jones we rarely got to see at Dior and it’s really exciting to see where he will go in future collections.
