Burberry 2020 Ad

On the 10th November, Burberry released their latest video advert. Directed by Megaforce, the two minute video consists of a cast of four young people, Chantel Foo, Kevin Bago, Robinson Cassarino and Zhane Samuels, navigating their way through a colossal hail storm. A giant hail storm may seem out of place in a fashion campaign at first, but when you consider that the house’s founder, Thomas Burberry founded the brand on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect people from the British weather, it starts to make more sense. A majority of the film is shot in Petticoat Lane in London, where the infamous Petticoat Lane market, one of London’s most famous markets, is held. The beach that the street opens up onto is the Lowestoft sea front in Suffolk.

For me, the video feels like an accurate representation of how young people choose to wear designer brands today, styled in ways often inspired by street style and probably not how the founders of the brand ever imagined their clothes would be worn. The clothes that young people chose to wear say a lot about who they are, and are carefully selected to reflect that. I particularly liked the styling, done by Ibrahim Kamara, of the puffer jackets worn over the iconic trench coats.

In my opinion since Riccardo Tisci was named chief creative officer at the brand in 2018, the house has moved away from the archetypal Burberry image of pristine trench coats, monogramed cashmere scarves and ruby red lipstick, and found itself a more modernised image that includes street wear inspired designs, and a bold new logo.
